The Vallance Trophy
The Vallance Trophy was presented by Mr R K Vallance, a Life Member
and Past President of the New Zealand Badminton Federation, and
first competed for in 1960.
About Dick Vallance
Dick was a member of the NZBF Management Committee from 1960-1985,
awarded the NZBF Service Award in 1972, elected Life Member of Badminton
NZ in 1978, was Vice-President of Badminton NZ from 1979-1982 and
President from 1983-1984.
Other services to NZ Badminton included: Manager of NZ teams touring
overseas, delegate to IBF AGM, and author of 2 history booklets
on NZ badminton for 1977 Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Dick passed away suddenly at home on 28 May 2004.
Rules of Competition
- The Vallance Trophy is to be awarded for the best performance
by a New Zealand umpire at the New Zealand Championships (Equinox NZ Open).
- It is to be competed for on quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.
- The competition is open to all qualified New Zealand umpires,
Grade Three and above. Entrants must signify to the Tournament
Controller, their intention to compete.
- Members of the judging panel shall not be contestants for the
Trophy but may still umpire during the Championships. The panel
shall consist of persons selected by Badminton NZ, and at least
one of the members of the panel should be resident in the host
Association area.
- The winner only shall be announced at the presentation of trophies.
- The Trophy is to be held by the winner until the next Championships
and the safe custody of the Trophy is the responsibility of the
winner.
- The Trophy is to be insured by Badminton NZ.
